Technical rescue incidents pose a variety of management challenges. In this two-day class the students will learn how the NFPA standards (1670, 1006, and 1983) structure management decisions and provide incident commanders and the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) with the guidance they need to maintain safety while performing the rescue operation.
Pre-requisites: Students who attend this class must have a background in technical rescue, although no rope skills are required.
At the completion of this class, the students should be able to:
- Specify the equipment needed to perform technical rescues (high angle, confined space, swiftwater, trench and structural collapse).
- Define key terms and list the basic requirements specified in relevant NFPA standards.
- Perform a hazard analysis and risk assessment for each type of technical rescue incident.
- List the key training requirements for each type of technical rescue as a function of the team’s capability (awareness, operations, technician).
- Conduct a command and control sequence that includes each of the following steps:
- Scene size-up, establishing command and establishing sectors.
- Ensuring the safety of the general area and rescue area.
- Overseeing the rescue operation, teardown, debrief, and pre-plan updating.
